Chapter 17: Leveling your Demigod

Your Demigod's journey is one of constant growth and transformation. Through overcoming trials, vanquishing powerful foes, and completing epic quests, they will gain experience and advance in power, unlocking new abilities, enhancing their skills, and evolving into a true force to be reckoned with in the realms of Demayth.

Gaining Experience Points (XP)

Character advancement in Demayth Adventures is measured through Experience Points (XP). Your Battle Master will award XP to you and your party for a variety of accomplishments that reflect your character's growth and impact on the world. XP is typically earned through:

  • Completing Quests: Fulfilling the objectives of a quest is the primary way to earn XP. The amount is based on the quest's difficulty and importance to the overall narrative.
  • Overcoming Combat Encounters: Defeating enemies and surviving challenges in battle yields XP. Tougher foes grant greater rewards.
  • Skillful Actions: Successfully using your skills in clever or critical ways to overcome obstacles, gather crucial information, or navigate dangerous situations can be rewarded with bonus XP.
  • Significant Roleplaying: Engaging in immersive roleplaying, making meaningful character decisions, advancing the story through dialogue, and contributing to the collaborative narrative can also earn XP at the Battle Master's discretion.

Milestones and Leveling

Each character level has an associated XP threshold. Once your Demigod accumulates enough XP to meet or exceed the requirement for the next level, they immediately "level up." Leveling up represents a significant milestone in their development, granting a host of benefits and new opportunities for customization. Upon leveling up, you will always gain 1 additional maximum Demayth Point and consult the table below to see what Milestones you have unlocked.

The Level Progression Table

This table outlines the total experience points (XP) required to reach each level, along with the Milestones your Demigod unlocks at each new level.

Milestone Types and Benefits

Each time you gain a Milestone, you immediately receive its benefit.

  • Mastery Milestone: Gain 5 Mastery Points to allocate to any school(s) of magic you are proficient in. You may also create 2 new abilities for any school(s) you have ranks in (or 1 new ability, for each school, if you invest in a new school for the first time).
  • Power Milestone: Add 2 Common or Specialist cards (Demayth Mastery or Battle Master), or 1 of each, to your Demayth Deck.
  • Perk Milestone: Gain 1 new Perk. The perk must be governed by one or two schools of magic in which you have at least 1 Mastery Rank.
  • Attribute Milestone: Gain 3 Attribute Points to distribute among your six attributes as you choose.
  • Skillful Milestone: Choose one skill. You can either gain Proficiency in a skill you are Untrained in, or advance a skill from Proficient to Mastered.
  • Endurance Milestone: Gain 1 Endurance point. Each Endurance point you possess grants your character a bonus to their maximum Health Points (HP) equal to 3 + their current Constitution modifier (minimum of +3 HP total per point). If your Constitution modifier changes, the HP bonus from all Endurance points is recalculated.
  • Demigod Milestone: You have reached a new pinnacle of power. Add 1 Godlike Demayth Card (GDC) OR 1 Godlike Battle Card (GBC) to your deck.
  • Control Milestone: You have greater control over your own development. Choose any one of the above milestones to gain, with the exception of the Perk and Demigod Milestones.

Optional Rule: Learning Through Practice

Beyond the structured advancement of Milestones, your Battle Master may allow you to learn new abilities or perks through dedicated training during downtime. This represents honing your skills through focused effort rather than just raw experience.

  • Progression Through Practice: This process follows a percentage-based system.
    • Skill Check: To begin training a new ability or perk, you must first make a relevant skill check (e.g., Demayth Knowledge for a magical ability, Athletics for a martial one) against a DC set by the BM.
    • Progress Roll: If the skill check succeeds, roll a d10. The result is the percentage of progress made.
    • Accumulate Progress: Your BM tracks this progress. Subsequent training sessions require further skill checks and d10 rolls.
    • Reach 100%: Once your total progress reaches 100%, you have successfully learned the new ability or perk.

Beyond Level 21: The Final Path

Reaching level 21 marks the culmination of a Demigod's journey. At this point, having achieved immense power and likely fulfilling many of their initial goals, a Demigod faces a monumental choice about their future, embracing one of the Three Paths:

  • Retirement: Set aside the life of adventure to pursue peace, mentorship, family, or other personal passions.
  • Influencer Godhood (Ascension): Attempt the perilous path of Ascension to become a true deity, creating a personal realm and religion. This path means refraining from interfering with the domains of the other Elder Divine.
  • Intent God Ranks (Intent): Continue the pursuit of power while remaining bound to a chosen realm. This path unlocks a new progression system of 12 Intent God Ranks, each requiring the completion of extraordinary tasks. This path is fraught with risk, including permanent death, but offers rewards of unparalleled strength and the ability to surpass the limitations of ordinary Demigods.

Intent God Ranks

  • Broken Limitations: Godlike Attributes: Intent Gods shatter the normal attribute cap of 40, potentially reaching a maximum of 100 with a +30 modifier. This grants them extraordinary capabilities and unparalleled potential.

Godlike Milestones:

Each of the 12 Intent God ranks unlocks a choice of one unique, more powerful milestone:

  • Godlike Mastery Milestone: Gain 7 Mastery Points for any schools of magic, allowing them to go beyond rank 21.
  • Godlike Ability Milestone: Gain 4 new abilities (from any school) and 2 Godlike Abilities.
  • Godlike Perk Milestone: Gain 1 new Perk from any school of magic in which you have at least 1 Mastery Point.
  • Godlike Attribute Milestone: Gain 6 Attribute Points to distribute as you choose.
  • Godlike Skillful Milestone: Improve one skill to Mastered, or if already Mastered, to the new God Skill Rank.
  • Godlike Endurance Milestone: Increase your maximum HP by 10 + your Spellcasting Modifier.
  • Intent God Milestone: Replace 1 Demayth or Battle card in your deck with a Godlike equivalent (GDC or GBC).

God Skill Rank: This new level of skill proficiency grants a permanent +5 bonus to all checks with that skill. Additionally, once per day, you can choose to automatically succeed at a task related to that skill, as if you had rolled a natural 20.

Godlike Abilities: These are extraordinary abilities that can transcend the normal rules and schools of magic. They are incredibly powerful and can significantly alter the course of battles or events. The creation and approval of Godlike Abilities require close collaboration with the Battle Master to maintain balance. (See Chapter 12: Spell and Perk Creation for guidelines on crafting these abilities).
